Monthly Library Program Goes Virtual Amidst Pandemic and Sees Success

Planning Unit: Hardin County CES

Major Program: Food Preparation and Preservation

Plan of Work: Active Living and Health Promotion

Outcome: Initial Outcome

When the pandemic hit, all programs stopped for a short time. Within just a few months though, the Hardin County FCS Program and Hardin County Public Library decided to take their former monthly nutrition programs to a virtual platform. With more interest in local foods, preparing meals at home, and the need to learn new ways to prepare what's in your pantry for cheaper, a nutrition and appliance series began.

Topics ranged from air fryers to electric pressure cookers, canning, dehydrating, microwaves, griddles, and more. Recipes were nutritious, and appliance how tos were shown.

After the range of appliances were done and the 2021 NEP Food and Nutrition Calendars were released, FCS and HCPL decided to continue the monthly lessons, but to cook the recipe in the monthly calendar utilizing some of the appliances that had been taught about the year before.

A program that used to have 20-30 people in attendance now has video views of 180-500. Questions are directed to the FCS agent who can answer them live while the video is playing. Contact information for follow up is also provided and viewers often email asking for recipes or more even weeks after videos play.

In the 2020-2021 year, FCS videos were viewed on the library page 4,056 times.
