Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Lewis County Extension Service conducted a program on Bullying at the Lewis County Middle School with 6th and 7th grade students. The program is done each year but was started because the principal and guidance counselor requested it and continue to want the program taught each year.  They want the program to continue because bullying is a consistent problem at the school. Another reason they want it continued is because of a teen suicide that happened in another county close to Lewis County three years ago due to bullying. A total of 212 students participated in the program. The 4-H agent conducted 3 different lessons with sixth grade and 2 with 7th grade teaching youth what bullying behavior is, what to do if you are bullied and what to do if you witness bullying. The material used came from “The Bully Free Classroom”.  Two videos were also used and they were titled “Silent On The Sidelines: Why We Ignore Bullying” and “Internet Bullies”. A survey was conducted approximately 5 months after the lessons to measure their effectiveness. Of the students that participated in the program 199 were surveyed. Of the students surveyed 148(74%) said they learned how to stop someone from being a bully, 139 (70%) said they had started treating others with more respect, 148(74%) said they had improved their skills on how to handle bullies and 102(51%) said since they had their lessons on bullying they had helped prevent someone from getting bullied by using the techniques they were taught.
