Members March On

Author: Valerie Holland

Planning Unit: Jefferson County CES

Major Program: Kentucky Extension Homemaker Association

Plan of Work: Developing Leadership Skills for Community and Civic Engagement

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Members of the Jefferson County Extension Homemakers Association are very diverse and capable leaders who are not afraid of a challenge.  And they did face a huge challenge with the 2020 COVID 19 pandemic! Jefferson County rated in the highest case level of the state, but their tenacious spirit led them to find any way they could help and serve during this pandemic. Throughout the year, the Extension Homemakers have contributed time, talent and dollars to the community both on a county, area and state level by making masks for family, friends and the FCS program. Jefferson County Extension Homemakers reported a total of 17,050 volunteer hours which is equivalent to $486,607.00 given back to the community.

Members of Homemakers have been as actively engaged in education, leadership and volunteer service across Kentucky as they could be during the pandemic. They held productive Homemaker Council meetings via Zoom with their agent, watched Homemaker leader lessons online and embraced the use of technology.  The Jefferson County Homemakers have held county and area level leadership positions.   In the last year, one Jefferson County Homemaker went from the Louisville Area Homemaker Vice President to the Louisville Area President.

Several members and clubs received awards/recognition at the KEHA State Meeting for their projects. While members are increasing their knowledge of effective meeting skills, leadership styles, and team building skills, they are also sharing with others that knowledge learned and truly making a difference in Jefferson County.
