The COVID outbreak of 2020, brought the world to a halt. Many families were faced with reduced income due to job loss. Many youth did not understand the sudden decrease in family income, as youth are not well versed in financial education. According to the Jump Start Coalition Survey (2008), 12th-grade students received only an average score of 48.3% average on financial literacy testing.

To assist youth and families to further understand financial management education during COVID restriction, CES developed a virtual program for money management education entitled, “It’s Your Reality.” The program included five online videos and hands-on activities that covered the following content; a) Needs versus Wants, b) Financial Goal Setting, c) Budgeting, d) How Much Do I Cost, and e) Credit Card Basics. After youth went through the six hours of basic financial education, a culminating activity to create a budget and make financial decisions and purchases as an adult.

Over 400 youth participated in the virtual “Its Your Reality” program. As a direct result of their participation in the program, 81% of males reported that they strongly agree or agree that they can make a wise financial decision, and will begin creating a personal budget with a savings plan.  While 98% of females reported that they strongly agree or agree they can make a wise financial decision as a direct result of participating in the program. Additionally, they will begin creating a personal budget with a savings plan.
