In the modern age of technology, the nature of estate planning has changed. Because so much personal information is stored online, new strategies must be undertaken in order to protect one’s digital assets. Digital estate planning helps loved ones to locate and access important digital information, it may clarify disputes regarding final will and testament, and it may simplify the transition for family members. Fayette Co. Extension FCS partnered with Bluegrass Elder Law to present “Planning Your Digital Estate” in October 2020 via Zoom meeting and live streaming to 47 attendees across the Bluegrass Area which included Bourbon County Extension Homemakers. The majority of those in attendance were designated leaders and shared with additional homemaker clubs and other groups. Based upon post program evaluations, 100% of attendees identified the need for and how to create their own digital estate plan; 92% acknowledged understanding how digital estate planning can ensure the safety and security of one’s own information; 92% committed to using the presented information to take inventory and write a personal digital estate plan; 100% stated the need to share with family members or friends; 100% stated that the program was timely, practical and educational. Shared post comments: “I just didn’t realize how digital information leaves such a footprint of your life”; “It made me aware that if I passed suddenly, my executor would have no idea of how much info and accounts that I have on the internet”; “I will definitely use this information!” A three-month post survey will provide further data on the program’s impact.
