The 4-H Camping program has been instrumental for years in guiding youth and teaching valuable life skills to help improve the quality of life of each of the campers that attends. Youth develop a greater sense of independence and self-esteem as well as learn valuable lessons in building relationships with peers and caring adults. In the last seven years, the Fleming County 4-H Camping program has seen significant growth. Through innovative recruitment and marketing ideas, the Fleming County Camping Program has grown from 30 participants in 2013 to 101 in 2019 successfully exceeding the recommended number youth significantly for the last three years. With the reduction of camping capacity to 50% it was anticipated for each of our camping counties to bring 50% or less campers than previously projected. With low numbers reported from other counties in our camping group, Fleming County was able to successfully take over 70 youth and adults to 4-H Camp for 2021. The strength and anticipation of the Fleming County 4-H Camping program far outweighed the weariness of the Covid-19 pandemic and the guidelines necessary to keep everyone safe.
Upon completion of the week 65% of youth stated “they felt comfortable taking care of their own things” and 72% of the youth said “they tried at least one new thing while at camp”. 94% of the volunteers in attendance stated that they “noticed significant growth in camper independence from the beginning to the end of the week”. 85% of parents reported their youth was "invigorated and inspired" as a result of their participation in the 2021 4-H Camping program.
