During program year 2021, the Grayson County 4-H Agent planned to main virtual learning formats. The first being for families that wanted to have virtual supplemental lessons; ten families signed up at the beginning of the year, three completed all projects. The agent worked to have a virtual lesson focused on Core 4-H Areas and set the lesson project up using the virtual platform Sway. Lessons that required materials that families may not have had on hand at home were provided by the agent for a parent to pick up. Lessons included: Eco-bots, Service Learning, Natural Resources- Birds, Global Education- Asian Culture, and Health. Families had to complete a Qualtrics survey after completing the lesson, also providing a photo of the family’s youth who participated with completed project. They would then receive the link for the next month’s lesson.
The second virtual group was a cooking club. The agent had signups for a month at the beginning of the school year. Seven youth (four families) signed up to have a monthly cooking lesson using the Zoom platform. One week prior to the meetings, the agent had the recipes prepared with an ingredients list; it was an objective to use recipes where many of the ingredients were on-hand in home; but the list was sent at least one week before to ensure the families had enough time to shop and gather the supplies that were needed. Meetings began in November and went through April. Each month had two to three recipes that went with a theme and were meant to be so the youth could recreate them at home by themselves or with minimal adult assistance. November with the holiday, the theme was appetizers; youth could prepare and make these ahead of time before the major holiday meal cooking began. December theme was breakfast recipes; January’s theme was tailgating food as the meeting was the Monday prior to the Super Bowl; February’s theme was easy desserts; March’s theme was focused on Easter meal assistance- Bruschetta and Key Lime Icebox Cheesecake. For April, which was the youth’s favorite, the focus was homemade pizza, where the members made their own pizza dough and pizza sauce. One member followed up, saying since then she has made pizza for her family at least twice a month since learning those skills.
