Grayson County took a powerful step forward in community resilience with the launch of its first annual Community Disaster Preparedness Summit, drawing an enthusiastic crowd of 75 participants. Hosted by the Grayson Co. Extension Office, Local Emergency Management officials and Grayson Co. Health Department, the event proved to be a resounding success—offering vital education, practical tools, and a sense of shared responsibility in the face of natural disasters and emergencies.
The summit kicked off with an engaging keynote by Meteorologist Shane Holinde, who provided eye-opening insights into shifting weather patterns and the growing impact of recent disasters in the region. His message underscored the urgency and importance of local preparedness efforts.
A robust panel discussion followed, featuring voices from emergency management, public health, insurance, and community leadership. Panelists shared real-world experiences, best practices, and critical steps for readiness, while also answering questions from the audience. The interactive format sparked meaningful conversations and gave attendees a clearer understanding of how to protect their families and neighborhoods.
The Resource Expo was another standout feature, with booths from local and regional organizations offering hands-on demonstrations, preparedness checklists, emergency kit ideas, and more. Participants left not only informed but equipped with materials and strategies they could use right away. Attendees were also entered into drawings for weather radios, and smoke/carbon monoxide detectors. Over 40 of those items were distributed. The local health department gave away a fire extinguisher to each participant.
With 75 community members in attendance, the event marked a strong beginning for what is now slated to become an annual tradition. The positive feedback from attendees and partners alike highlighted the growing momentum behind disaster preparedness in Grayson County.
“This summit showed what’s possible when a community comes together,” said a first responder, and district board representative. “It’s not just about information—it’s about connection and empowerment.”
"The initial goal is to provide information, and if we can get at least one person doing something further to help them in the face of disaster, that is a win," said one Emergency Management Official.
As the Grayson Co. Disaster Preparedness Program continues to grow, events like this summit demonstrate how education, collaboration, and local leadership can build a safer, more resilient future for all.
