Extension: providing answers and in the field training

Major Program: Horticulture, Commercial

Plan of Work: Agricultural Practices

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Growing vegetables is very different than traditional row crops.  Weed control is the primary concern and very few products are labeled for post emergent weed control.  Most commercial producers grow on plastic.  New growers entering into small scale vegetable production, often have a learning curve and often lack the resources to purchase the needed equipment to start growing on plastic.

Utilizing some funding from the State Agriculture Development fund and matching local funding, the Henderson County Extension Office was able to acquire a plastic layer along with a trailer to haul it.  Early in 2021, the equipment was put into service and rented for a small daily fee.

Two new vegetable producers thus far has taken advantage of the shared use equipment and just as importantly, requested Extension's expertise with crop production practices.

Growing on plastic will reduce the need for pesticide use, increase yield, reduce water use, and in the end, help produce high quality fruit and vegetables.
