An essential goal of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Education Program is to equip people of all ages with nutritional knowledge. Doing so ensures that they grow and continue to make healthy decisions throughout life. For a while now, schools, businesses, and other community entities have had to figure out innovative ways to serve the community, while also staying safe.
Luckily, the Floyd County Cooperative Extension Office Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Education Program has figured out a very creative way to reach audiences throughout the county during this time. This year we have partnered with Prestonsburg, Martin, McDowell, Mudcreek, Betsy Layne, and Wheelwright Senior Citizens Centers to deliver information packets to participating adults. Reach has been continued through Floyd County by distributing information packets. These packets are made up of nutrition information, health tips, shopping and budgeting lessons, general recipes, as well as a recipe of the month.
Per request of the senior citizens centers, these have been distributed twice a month. So far, over 320 Floyd County residents have received (and continue to receive) these information packets! Upon dropping them off for distribution, one of the senior citizen center directors said “These little packets are great. My clients really enjoy them. They look forward to the information and recipes each time now. I’m grateful that, throughout all this, we are still able to collaborate and still make a difference”. So although the way we do things are heavily altered right now, the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Education Program is still able to maintain an indirect relationship with the community.
