Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Management and Marketing

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

The local distillery is looking to expand their bourbon operation and as a result they will need to get rid of several thousand gallons of stillage by product per day. At certain times of the year the distillery doesn't have an issue getting rid of the by product but other times of the year it can be a problem. The distillery only has one days worth of storage so the by product needs to be moved.

The distillery contacted the Agriculture and Natural Resources agent and in turn he contacted an Agriculture Engineering specialist that has expertise in livestock facilities. The distillery is looking to put up 3 or 4 beef confinement barns to be able to feed cattle their stillage by-product to take some of the pressure off their by-product storage. The facilities they are planning will hold up to 200 head

per barn. The agent along with the engineering specialist discussed some of the issues that they would have and one of the main areas of concern is manure management. It was suggested that they go with barns with manure pits that would only have to be pumped out 1 to 2 times per year, instead of pack barns that would require more labor on a weekly basis. Ventilation was also discussed

and how important it is to keep the cattle healthy in a confinement operation. Extension will keep up to date on the planning phase of the project.
