Virtual Dollars and Sense Program

Author: Samantha Gamblin

Planning Unit: Bullitt County CES

Major Program: Family and Consumer Science

Plan of Work: Youth and Adult Financial, Parenting, Life Skill, and Practical Skill Development

Outcome: Initial Outcome

The 2019 Most and Least Financially Literate States report, Kentucky ranks 45th in the nation for financial literacy. Youth learn about consumer science and finances early in schools. Dollars and Sense and Reality Store have always been a high demand for Bullitt County schools. When in person learning turned to virtual during the 2020-2021 school year we needed a plan for the highly requested program. So a user friendly Dollars and Sense program was created. Youth would still get to participate in all the same things Dollars and Sense program has to offer but a online version. A link was provided to the teachers to share with students. The link had all the booth information needed to complete their transaction form. Students could click on a booth, choose their items and record their purchases on their form. Before the link was provided. 4-H Agent and Assistant spoke to the students virtually about being responsible when spending their money and needs vs wants. There was a total of 408 participants and each student was given a budget of $220. They had to visit twelve stations and purchase something at each one just like a normal program. Teachers and students commented how they enjoyed getting to have the same Dollars and Sense experience but just virtually this year. After the program, 91% of the students said they would start saving their allowances from now on because stuff is expensive. Bullitt County will continue to offer this program in person or virtually in the future.
