Fall Gardening (Victory Garden)

Author: Jay Hettmansperger

Planning Unit: Boyle County CES

Major Program: Horticulture, Consumer and Home

Plan of Work: Valuing Natural Resources and Establishing Community Environmental Awareness

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Gardening has 3 seasons, Spring, Summer and Fall.  Not many people know that you can go right in behind your summer garden and plant more vegetables for a fall and early winter harvest.  The Garrard County FCS and ANR agents teamed up to promote Fall gardening. Twenty five bags were prepared with handy garden tools, a knee mat and assorted garden seeds suitable for Fall Gardening.  The ANR agent used the same seeds that were in the bags to plant a demonstration garden at the Extension office.  Participants picked up the bags at the office and took them home to plant their personal Fall garden. Participants were encouraged to post pictures on social media throughout the Fall growing season and report back about success with their gardens. Several people reported harvesting produce from their gardens. Five of the 25 original participants sent pictures back showing their successes and fruits of their labor. The ANR agent was able to harvest 20 pounds of green beans, 24 ears of sweet corn, 12 pounds of cucumbers, 5 pounds of radishes and 3 pounds of squash from the demonstration garden. Eighteen of the 25 participants indicated they learned they could plant a Fall garden and have time to harvest the produce.  Fifteen of the 25 participants indicated they would continue to plant a Fall Garden.
