Plan of Work: Agriculture Production, Management, and Environment

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Horticulture Webinar Wednesday, developed by Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service Agents for Horticulture Education in March of 2020, continued as a way to reach clientele with science-based information during the COVID-19 pandemic. The webinars were presented live through the virtual format of Zoom on Wednesdays at 2:00 p.m. ET throughout the Commonwealth.  Thirty-minute long presentations were followed by a question-and-answer period. All presentations were recorded and posted to Kentucky Hort News, along with the slides, notes, a survey, and other source materials as needed at www.kentuckyhortnews.com/horticulture-webinar-wednesdays/

The Daviess County Horticulture Agent presented a webinar on the third Wednesday of November on “Enjoying Holiday Plants.”  Sixty people joined the presentation from across the Commonwealth.  Of the 34 participants who completed a self-assessment survey, 94% said that as a result of the information presented, they would be able to take better care of their holiday plant, and 85% said they plan to grow a holiday plant they had not grown before.   Plants covered in the webinar included amaryllis, Norfolk Island Pine, holiday cacti, and poinsettias. They also indicated that they learned the following:  poinsettias are not poisonous; growing requirements for amaryllis, holiday cacti, Norfolk Island Pine, and poinsettia; how to make the amaryllis re-bloom the next year; steps for taking care of poinsettias in order to re-bloom; how to make holiday plants last longer; and ways to keep holiday plants for multiple years, thus saving money.
