Major Program: Securing Financial Stability (general)

Plan of Work: Achieving financial stability in homes and community

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

With the holidays being a time when most people find themselves in debt, over spending on gifts, food, and entertainment, the Bell County Cooperative Extension Service conducted a workshop on “Surviving the Holiday Season”.  Extension council members and the Family and Consumer Science Advisory Council asked for this program to be implemented to help families alleviate the financial stress and pressures that come with the holiday season.

64 participants received a publication from the University of Kentucky Cooperative Extension Service on ideas and tips to help make their money go further and ways to survive the Holidays. Clientele took part in hands-on workshops that focused on and encouraged reusing items they currently have. 100% of participants gained knowledge on money saving tips and ideas for gift giving.  85% of participants are using items they currently have at home for making gifts and ornaments to cut down on spending. One participant stated that, “This class made me realize that it doesn’t matter the cost of a gift, as long as it comes from the heart. You can come to this workshop and get inexpensive and creative ideas for gift giving that doesn’t break the bank.”
