Success Story

Eating More Fruits

Hancock County family resource and youth service center offers a Christmas points program, where a guardian can apply for help providing gifts for any children in their home. The Hancock County Cooperative Extension, Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program (EFNEP) teamed up with them to offer nutrition classes for the families to attend in order to receive points for the program.

In the entry survey it showed that 45% of people rarely ate fruit each day. The EFNEP assistant talked with the families and found that most of them did not buy fruits to have in their homes because the kids were not eating it.

As the classes began, we tried sample recipes that involved more fruits as options, such as...fruit and yogurt parfait and strawberry beets smoothie. We talked about how by adding different ingredients it can add different flavors. Also by making smoothies, a person can add more ingredients to get the recommended mineral and vitamins a day. MyPlate was a great reference to show how if we are adding fruit to each meal, we will be getting the recommended amount of fruit for each day.

On the exit survey it showed 55% of participants are eating fruit more often each day. The kids that attended the program with their guardians started to enjoy the different ways that fruits could be eaten, whether it was with a meal, or as a snack.
