4-H Day Camp on the Go - Cooking 101

Author: Ryan Spicer

Planning Unit: Breathitt County CES

Major Program: Family and Consumer Science

Plan of Work: Accessing Nutritious Foods in Breathitt County

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

According to the American Heart Association, teaching youth how to prepare their own food will give them a skill they can use for a lifetime, they will be more likely to eat healthier as adults, and build self-confidence. The Breathitt County Agent for 4-H Youth Development wants to provide these learning opportunities to the youth of Breathitt County in the anticipation that this statement will hold true. To ensure these learning experiences are offered during the Covid-19 pandemic the agent created day camp’s on the go using 4-H’s cooking 101 curriculum. The agent provided curriculum, activities, and baking supplies to complete six hours of instruction at home. For this program 25 youth participated and 100% of them indicated they gained knowledge on cooking, cooking safety, and accessing nutritious healthy foods. The program had great success in Breathitt County, and is one the agent plans to continue in the future.
