Outcome: Initial Outcome

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention,  Kentucky has the fifth-highest rate of obesity in the nation. About one-third of U.S. adults are obese. Approximately 12.5 million of children and adolescents ages 2-19 years are obese. In an effort to combat the growing rate of obesity among youth locally, Corbin Middle  School, Health Corp. and I are partnering to offer an afterschool program featuring the Teen Cuisine Curriculum. This program focuses on the connection between food and health and also focuses on the development of youth cooking skills. Our first program concluded on  December 5, 2017. The youth report eating more fruits and vegetables by incorporating smoothies and salads into their diets. One of the students prepared our class demo recipe successfully for her family dinner. This program is impacting the decisions of our young people, but will also be reaching their families with the message of healthy food choices.  This program will be offered again in the spring semester and has a  waiting list of interested kids. We have also expanded into Whitley  Middle School for next semester.
