Making a Positive Difference During Uncertain Times

Planning Unit: Lincoln County CES

Major Program: Kentucky Extension Homemaker Association

Plan of Work: Leadership Development & Volunteerism

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Members of the Lincoln County Extension Homemakers Association are truly leaders in their communities and are making a positive difference during uncertain times. Members work hard at the club, county, area, and state levels. My role as a Family and Consumers Sciences Agent is both an advisory role and a teaching role. I offer assistance as needed and teach educational classes on a variety of topics, including leadership development. Members utilize the skills learned in Extension programs in their own programming efforts and often share this information with family and friends. Lincoln County has 140 members and 14 clubs. Our membership is very diverse. We have the only Extension Homemaker club in the Philippines, an International club in the county, and a deaf quilting club. Members practice personal leadership skills in their clubs and community outreach. This year, members have been instrumental in their communities -- conducting programs jointly with the school system, churches, Family Resource and Youth Service Centers, UK Ovarian Cancer Research Center, and local banks and businesses.  Programs conducted include the Ovarian Cancer Tea raising funds for the UK Ovarian Cancer Research Fund, Lincoln County school BackPack Program to provide students with food to take home, Lincoln County School's Feeding Program Outreach during COVID-19 serving meals and delivering meals to youth, providing meals to residents in one local community during November and December, and serving veterans during a community appreciation event. Members made and donated over 1600  cloth face coverings to the Lincoln County Senior Citizens Center and to others in the community.  Members of the Lincoln County Extension Homemakers Association are actively involved and working hard to increase their knowledge and skills in personal, organizational, and community leadership. While increasing their knowledge of effective meeting skills, leadership styles, and team building skills, they are sharing with others that knowledge learned and truly making a positive difference in their communities.
