Author: Jeffrey Lehmkuhler

Planning Unit: Animal and Food Sciences

Major Program: Beef

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

A full 2-day educational program targeted to producers, county agents and feed dealers in the southeast.  The goal was to provide an educational program for those involved in this specialized segment of the beef industry to learn more about management, feeding and preventative health of feeder cattle managed in backgrounding operations. The program combined hands-on and classroom educational approaches. Funding was received to support the program from KADF KBN as well as industry support.   The program was capped to 30 participants to ensure all participants opportunities for hands-on learning experiences and the program reached the enrollment limit.  Participants gained animal handling and well-being knowledge related to proper herd health protocols, vaccine handling and implant administration.  Increased understanding of feeds and ruminant digestive physiology was gained which will improve production efficiency and reduce risk of digestive and metabolic disorders.  Post-program survey responses indicated participants found the program very informative.  On average participants indicated the knowledge gained would potentially add $2,000/annually per operation for a calculated impact of nearly $52,000 across participants.
