Adapting to a virtual world

Author: Isaac Hilpp

Planning Unit: 4-H Central Operations

Major Program: 4-H Family and Consumer Science Core Curriculum

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Situation: During the spring of 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic forced a stay at home order in the state of Kentucky that would extend through the remainder of the 4-H program year. 4-H as with all educational organizations faced the opportunity to create engaging and meaningful online content for youth to participate in.

Educational response: Kentucky 4-H launched the daily virtual experiences and brown bag programs in response to stay at home orders and the closing of public schools. Each day new videos, live streams, and events were added to Kentucky 4-H's social media accounts, and local programs provided programs that could be picked up at extension office using no contact methods. These videos and events included a Sewing & Needlework video series to provide access to experts for youth learning new skills, a statewide service project to provide masks to the Kentucky Children's Hosptial, cooking with Chef T videos, Virtual Fashion Meetups, and a virtual cooking club.

Target Audience: Kentucky youth 9-18

Outcomes: As a result of the virtual programming in 4-H FCS:

  • 130 youth reported feeling a sense of connection during the COVID-19 Pandemic.
  •  82 youth reported learning new skills in ether needlework, sewing, or cooking.
  • Over 400 masks were provided to health care workers at Kentucky Children's Hospital as well as other local medical facilities across the state.
  • The Fashion Leadership Board gained experience in virtual events by planning and implementing the statewide virtual experience.
