Healthy GrandFamilies Program Access for LEP Audiences

Author: Jessica Marquez

Planning Unit: Jefferson County CES

Major Program: Promoting Healthy Homes and Communities (general)

Plan of Work: Educating, & empowering individuals & families to make responsible choices & develop lifeskills

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Issues: What is the situation? Who cares and why?

The number of Grandparent-headed households (GrandFamilies) is rapidly growing. Low income and minorities are disproportionately represented and lack adequate access to community-based services and programs. Many grandparents are challenged with generational gaps when raising their grandchildren and may lack knowledge on how to address issues that are due to this.

Response: What has been done? Summarize your program, project, or response to the issue.

In collaboration with FCS Agent Ms. Carter and Specialist Dr. Young I assisted in recruiting LEP audiences for the Healthy GradFamilies Program. The program is a free initiative to provide information and resources to grandparents who are raising their grandchildren. The program is designed as a series of discussion groups and follow-up services. I worked on creating a community flyer in Spanish and distributing it to Spanish speaking audiences. I also worked on recruiting community members to participate in this program. I will also assist in providing translators and interpreters for the material and program sessions for LEP audiences that sign up.

Results/Impact: How has your response affected the user/stakeholders involved with the issue?

We have not been able to start the program due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, we have individuals who want to be contacted once we do start the program.
