Kentucky’s forests and woodlands provide numerous benefits to the Commonwealth. The more than 12 million acres of woodlands in Kentucky serve as the foundation of a forest sector with over 53,000 jobs and an economic contribution of over $13 billion annually to the state’s economy. Forests also provide countless ecosystem services such as wildlife habitat, water and air filtration, as well as many recreational opportunities that support a robust tourism industry. More than 75% of Kentucky woodlands are family owned. To ensure these woodlands are as healthy and productive as possible these family owners benefit by being informed of the threats, opportunities, and sources of assistance available. Supporting these family woodland owners is a primary mission of the UK Forestry and Natural Resources Extension team.
Despite the impact COVID-19 has had on traditional in-person Extension programming the need to support Kentucky’s family woodland owners remains. To help address this need the UK Forestry and Natural Resources Extension Team plans, develops, and broadcasts a new weekly web show called “From the Woods Today”. The program is presented live via Zoom and Facebook, and recordings are available through a new website (http://forestry.ca.uky.edu/woods-today). The show provides timely information related to forestry and natural resources issues. Following the public portion of the show, there is an after-program specifically designed for county agents/staff/volunteers (who can receive professional development credit for joining) to address any additional concerns and discuss emerging issues. Thus far, more than 6,200 viewers including woodland owners, natural resource professionals, youth, and county Extension agents/staff/volunteers have seen the show. “From the Woods Today” is building an online community of those interested in Kentucky’s forests and related natural resources.
