Agriculture and livestock are growing industries not only in the United States but also here in our home of Kentucky. The Henderson County Herdsmen Club provides many opportunities for our youth to continue to grow and become well versed in both industries.
One of our events within our program is hosting an educational livestock clinic. During the clinic, various industry leaders from the Cattle, Goat/Sheep and Swine industries are invited to share their knowledge and experience with 4-Hers. The topics that each speaker discussed ranged from grooming, common industry practices, nutrition and showmanship. 4-Hers were able to participate with hands-on activities such as 4-Hers assisting goats in labor, studying and learning different feedstuffs and a mock showmanship class minus animals. 4-Hers involved in a swine project had the opportunity to show off their showmanship skills using only a large beach ball and a driving instrument. The youth were able to break down the basics of showmanship and build their skills with help from our guest lecturers. Activities like this allow the youth to become comfortable with the project and also allows the youth to grasp a better understanding of why these skills are important.
