In response to a survey Fayette County Residents indicated they would like more educational classes about gardening and food production from Cooperative Extension. In an effort to meet this need, the Fayette County Horticulture program dramatically expanded our Gardener’s Toolbox series of classes to include over twenty educational programs on a variety of sustainable living and gardening topics. Wherever possible, classes were designed to feature demonstrations or actual hands-on activities. In 2019 attendance for these classes more than doubled from the previous year and we filled over 4000 seats for the year. In these classes, residents received in-depth training related to horticulture. 100% of those responding indicated they had changed the way they care for their gardens to reflect Cooperative Extension recommendations and 53% stated they had started growing vegetables at home as a result of these classes. These informal learning sessions epitomize the role Cooperative Extension plays in our community.
