Outcome: Initial Outcome

An applied forage research trial in Powell County KY examined the effect of potassium addition to a hay field testing ‘Very Low’ in potassium according to UK soil testing standards. Results from the study have shown excellent yield and botanical composition improvement (less broomsedge and more desirable forage species) from fertilizing with potassium according to UK soil test recommendations. These results have been disseminated via social media, e-newsletters and state and national media. One producer reported an approximately 33% increase in yield (one ton of additional forage dry matter per acre) due to the additional potassium fertilizer he applied as a direct result of the educational outreach regarding this trial. Proper addition of potassium resulted in a positive return of $24 per acre based on current prices of potassium and a forage value of $50 per ton of hay.
