In the article, Benefits of Nature for Children and Families, it states that “As children grow to teenagers, media usage jumps exponentially, with computers and social media playing ever-important roles. Most studies on the digital health and emotional well-being of children agree there are pitfalls and benefits of technology.” The article talked about the lack of nature and the consequences it can have on a youth’s overall well being. Furthermore, the article concluded that, “There are many scientific studies that underscore the benefits of nature, including stress relief, improved short-term memory, increased mental energy, less inflammation, better vision, improved concentration, creativity, and improved mental health.”
In an effort to get more middle school and high school aged youth outdoors, the CES created a 4-H Outdoor Adventure Club. The CES marketed to the older youth in the county to help them find an alternative to help reduce the time they spend on technology and screen time. The CES created lessons from the 4-H Outdoor Adventure series to help create a guide for the club. The CES gave leadership to the Club officers in creating a list of outdoor activities the group would like to participate in.
Since the beginning of the program year, this club has experienced monthly lessons on outdoor camping. They learned different ways to make a fire and also different ways to start a fire. They learned about safety when camping and also hiking. We were gearing up for a big trip but plans for our summer camping trip was canceled due to the COVID-19.
In this club, the youth involved are engaged and take ownership of this unique club. Parents have mentioned that this club is the only time they’ve seen them get outside and enjoy it. They have also mentioned that their participants want to do more family camping trips. 100% of the participants said they have a more understanding on the outdoors. 100% feel confident and part of a group because of this club.
