FY18 First Quarter Impact Statement

Montgomery County

Many children do not understand basic nutrition and why it is important. I am currently partnering with Montgomery County Elementary schools to teach nutrition education in their three schools. Our classes are set up as a partnership with the physical education teachers and family resource officers to encourage healthy eating habits and exercise. I recently finished up a program with kindergarten and first grade students. Many of these children could not tell what foods were fruits or vegetables. Many didn’t know about the food groups. After completing the MP-Saurus Eats curriculum, many of these young people were able to recognize a variety of fruits and vegetables and also identify correct food groups for random foods listed. The feedback received from parents and teachers about their willingness to try new foods and snack on fruits and vegetables has been overwhelmingly positive. This partnership will be ongoing to continually reach new children with this increasingly important information.
