4-H Activity Packets During Covid-19

Author: Heather Coleman

Planning Unit: Floyd County CES

Major Program: 4-H Youth Development Programming

Plan of Work: Youth Resource, Communication and Leadership Development

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Since all Floyd County Youth had their school year cut short, we at the Floyd County Extension Office wanted to provide youth with fun educational activities that they could enjoy.  An activity packet was designed from the 4-H Core Content Areas. Those areas were Family and Consumer Science, Health, STEM, Communications and Expressive Arts, Agriculture and Natural Resources.  Each kit contained six educational hours of learning materials and each kit was given out over a 2 week time period, totaling 36 hours of family engagement. In each kit was a core content newsletter with the educational lessons and hands on activities, Chop Chop book, activities supplies and our hand washing flyer. 4-H activity packets were either mailed or picked up on request. We had 540 youth take activity packets, representing 274 families. A mom of two boys and a former 4-H had this to say about our kits.  “When I asked the boys about the activities they said they really liked them.  They especially enjoyed the art one and the butterfly kits.  As a mom I thought they were really great activities full of lots of information about various topics.  We’ve enjoyed receiving them and truly appreciate them.” Requests have been made for kits to continue if another surge occurs.
