Author: Mary McCarty

Planning Unit: Menifee County CES

Major Program: 4-H Agriculture Core Curriculum AND Natural Resources

Plan of Work: Animal Science

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

Kentucky has much to offer in the way of agriculture. Of Kentucky’s total acreage (25.4 million acres), 12.8 million acres (50%) is farmland. Kentucky farms produce a variety of agricultural products. In Menifee County agricultural enterprises (based on sales) are centered around hay, cattle and calves, and soybeans and corn. According to the 2017 Ag Statistics from USDA, Menifee County agriculture contributes roughly $2.3 million dollar to our economy.

The Menifee County 4-H Agricultural Science Program engages 4-H members in a variety of hands-on activities and experiences that cultivate an increased understanding and appreciation for agriculture. During the Covid 19 outbreak of 2020 all Extension Programs were moved to an online system.  The program “Barnyard Show and Tell with Ms. Mary” was born.  The ANR/4-H agent posted educational videos to the Menifee County 4-H Facebook page about animals that you may find on Menifee County Farms.

Three Videos were posted and shared on the Menifee County Schools page as well as all Menifee County Extension pages.  Cattle, Horse, and Pig video were posted.  7300 post engagements were made for the 3 videos that were posted.  Videos were also used for the 21st Champion Programs at Botts School.

The average age of Menifee County farmers is 57 years of age.  The love of agriculture must be introduced to the youth of Menifee County and the United States to continue to feed America.  The Menifee County Cooperative Extension Service is dedicated to increase the knowledge and love for Agriculture in Menifee County.
