When families have after-school activities, late workdays, and lots of homework, it’s no wonder few families eat dinner together. Studies have long shown that family meals are an important part of healthy living. According to recent surveys, less than half of today’s families in the U.S. actually sit down to a meal on a regular basis.

“Manners for the Real World” stresses the importance of mealtime, and everyone pitching in to help pull it together. The local library and UKCES Family & Consumer Sciences agent collaborated through a social media event that had over 700 participants. It focused on proper table setting and etiquette for family meals. Additional information was shared about table manners and appropriate dinner conversation.

The resources included tips to equip families to be prepared ahead of mealtime without spending a lot of time in the kitchen. In addition, cooperation by each family member is discussed, since mealtime is everyone’s responsibility.

‘Extension on the Go’ kits were available for curbside pickup at the library for families who wanted to add a hands-on activity. Kits contained a plate, napkin, flatware and beverage glass so that children could practice proper dinnerware placement. Activities and recipe cards with simple, nutritious meals that families could prepare together were also included.

Feedback from families included children wanting to help with setting the table and other chores related to mealtime. They also commented “it’s nice to learn these skills that will serve them well throughout their lifetime”.
