Careers in Science, Engineering and Technology (SET) are expected to grow at faster rate than the average for all other occupations based on data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. In this field workers use their knowledge of science, technology, engineering, or math (STEM) to try to understand how the world works and to solve problems. Introducing youth to SET activities can spark an interest and develop skills that can provide a framework to future success in these fields.
Traditional programming was suspended due to the Coronavirus Pandemic in March. Shelby County 4-H quickly adapted and offered programming through virtual methods and pick up projects from the front porch of the Extension Office. The 4-H Agent and assistants put together a 4-H STEM Challenge Kit for our youth. The kit included a workbook of over forty SET activities and experiments. The kits also included many of the supplies needed to carry out twenty of the activities. A challenge calendar highlighted a new activity each week day for the month of May. Any youth or family that completed at least 15 experiments were entered in a drawing for a SNAP Circuit Kit.
All 25 kits were picked up by 4-H families. Eight 4-Hers completed the challenge and entered the drawing. Additionally, a Qualitrics survey was sent to all families that picked up a STEM Challenge Kit. Based on the responses, the average number of experiments completed was 14. All of the respondents said that the project allowed their family to engage in science related activities together, introduced new science related concepts, and sparked an interest in science. Eighty-eight percent planned on exploring more science related activities and felt they could use the knowledge they learned on a routine basis. When asked what they enjoyed most about the kits, one family responded; “The STEM kit brought us together for a fun educational opportunity.” Other responses included: “It brought our family (with teenage kids) together”, “Loved what reactions we achieved with the different projects” and “Enjoyed the opportunity to do more science experiments at home”.
The STEM Challenge Kits allowed 4-H families to explore science in a fun, hands on way while quarantining at home. Hopefully it sparked an interest that could lead a 4-H member to a career or lifelong interest in science, engineering or technology.
