Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The 2nd Grade Team at Rangeland Elementary contacted Me about programming opportunities available through Kentucky State University 4-H Program.  A  Needs Assessment was sent to teachers to determine the needs of the teachers and students. The assessment determined that teachers wanted robotics, nutrition, and leadership activities.  A meeting was held with team and it was determined that due to the demographics of the school and the issues they are having with food security among its students  that Nutrition Education would best suit their current needs.

Rangeland Elementary School is a Title 1 School  with 430 students where only 25.8% of students meet or exceed expectations in reading and only 20.7 in Math.  Percentages in Science were 7.8%, Social Studies 13.4%, and writing 29.3%.  90.2% of the students are economically disadvantaged according to the Jefferson County Public Schools Report Card.  Louisville/Jefferson Co. currently ranks 5th among peer cities in food  insecurity with 16.1% of residents experiencing food insecurity.  additionally, Louisville ranks 2nd in rates of children who live in a household experiencing food insecurity with a rate of 17%.

A 6-Week Nutrition program was implemented using the My Plate Curriculum as well as USDA  guidelines and activities as well. Lessons included: 5 Food Groups, Movement Activities, Nutrition Bingo, Building A Healthy Plate and food demonstrations. I was assisted by FCS Agent Ms. Jeanie Carter, Ms. Emma Robinson FNEP and Patrice Thompson 4-H Agent on lessons as well. A team approach was used to meet the needs of the students and teachers. 48 Second Graders were reached and given the tools to live and eat healthy!!
