You're Never Too Old to Like Something New

Major Program: Accessing Nutritious Foods (general)

Outcome: Initial Outcome

I finally was able to have my first class with a new group from a low income housing community after two reschedules due to high Flu season.  I was excited to finally get to my home town area! Three people showed up, which I was kind of disappointed at but given the rampant flu season, I was excited to at least get started.

One gentleman, Charles, was very excited to be there along with a senior lady, Margaret, was super nice and they were very talkative and engaging. Another younger woman, Margaret's daughter, also attended.

Charles, in his 70's was anxious to eat and cook something! When I showed them the recipe for Citrus Chicken Stir Fry, he said he had never really eaten peppers and didn't care for them but he might try them in this sampling.

Charles wanted to cook, he was so very helpful and so very excited to be helping me chop peppers. He chopped Peppers and asked for guidance on things he wasn't sure about. He wanted to cook it also so we cooked up that recipe with him by my side. He was so proud of himself, he asked me to snap some pictures for his family because they just wouldn't believe he had did that by himself. I was so proud of him and so happy that he had completed the task at hand. He sat down and even ate those peppers and said he really liked them! He would definitely eat them again after never haven eaten them at all and I was so proud of him for trying something new!

Margaret, who is 88 said she didn't like rice because she had always had to eat it as kid long ago and it just held bad memories for her. Her daughter who was also in attendance added that her mother would never eat rice. Upon our Citrus Chicken Stir Fry being completed, I gave her a sampling along with some rice mixed in and she said she would try it and she ate it all! She was surprised that she liked it at all and I was so proud of her for trying something she thought she hated.

Covid 19 hit in shortly after this first class so I am very anxious to get back to this group because I know they are going to be so helpful and learn so much and they're going to go outside their comfort zone and try something they think they do not like.
