Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and the social distancing guidelines from our state and national public health entities, many in-person extension programs were not able to continue in the spring and summer months of this year. To adapt to these changes, our family and consumer science and 4-H agent created several programs “to-go” which were packaged and in front of the office for families to pick up and take home to complete. About 20 programs to-go were available for each topic. The programs created were Spring Cleaning with a focus on healthy homes and a homemade cleaner activity, Personal Finance with a focus on budgeting and the Bean Game activity, Earth Day with a focus on recycling and a DIY T-Shirt market bag activity, Mother’s Day with a focus on childhood literacy and a children’s book and homemade card activity, Farmer’s Market with a focus on eating fruits and vegetables and a tomato seed planting activity, Beginner Sewing with a focus on sewing buttons and basic hand-sewing techniques and a tissue pack cover activity, and Father’s Day with a focus on spending quality time with family and a “movie night bingo” and scribble-mug gift activity. Each program was targeted toward families and helping them develop a variety of life skills.
Participants were asked to complete an online survey to assess the impact of the programs to-go. Through this survey, participants indicated that 91% of households completed the learning activity and 100% of participants either learned or practiced a life skill. Good or excellent ratings of the programs to-go were given by 91% of survey participants and all participants said they would be interested in receiving more programs to-go.
