According to the Centers for Disease Control in 2017, nearly 500,000 deaths in the United States include hypertension as a primary or contributing cause. That is equivalent to about 1,300 deaths each day. Almost half of adults in the United States ( 108 million, or 45% ) have hypertension or are taking medication for hypertension. Only 1 in 4 adults ( 24% ) with hypertension have their condition under control. The Menifee County SNAP-ED Assistant in collaboration with the Menifee County Family and Consumer Sciences Extension Agent and Project Worth Food Pantry presented to a group of Grandparents raising grandchildren. The SNAP-ED Assistant presented four Healthy Choices for Every Body lessons. One of the participants stated she has high blood pressure and didn't realize how much sodium was in the foods we eat. She has been using the literature that was presented to her by the SNAP-ED Assistant from the lessons Reading Labels for Every Body and Know the Limits for Every Body. She stated that by changing the way she cooks for her family and by limiting the amount of salt she uses she has been able to lower her blood pressure.
