Sustainable Beekeeping

Planning Unit: Nelson County CES

Major Program: Bees/Beekeeping

Plan of Work: Production Horticulture, Horticulture Professions Development and Problem Solving

Outcome: Long-Term Outcome

Beekeeping in Nelson County has continued to increase over the past several years due in part to a very active Nelson County Beekeepers Association.  In the early spring of 2020, our group hosted a day-long "Sustainable Beekeeping" workshop.  More than 50 participants received hands-on training and insights from our more experienced club members on how to increase efficiency, lower cost inputs, and how to add value to their products. Topics included Swarm Catching, Hive Pest Control, Queen Rearing, Record Keeping, and Moving Hives.

As a result of this training and the monthly educational sessions, beekeeping confidence rose and 85 more hives were added in Nelson County.  Twelve volunteers stepped out of their comfort zone and taught peers about their experiences as a beekeeper.
