Major Program: 4-H Agriculture Core Curriculum AND Natural Resources

Plan of Work: Youth as Successful Citizens

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Agriculture and Farming are vital to the economy of Trigg County.  Latest statistics show that there are 397 farms in the county, and 90% of these farms are operated by families and individuals.  It is important that children become aware of how to be safe on the farm early on. The Trigg County ANR agent, FCS agent, and SNAP paraprofessional teamed together the conduct the annual Progressive Farm Safety Day for all 4th graders in Trigg County.  The event took place at a farm located in southern Trigg County.  Included in the event were sessions on topics such as gun safety, ATV safety, and electrical safety as well as food safety.

The ANR agent served as coordinator for the event and the FCS agent and SNAP paraprofessional presented the session on food safety.  Topics covered included proper hand washing and food borne illness through cross contamination.  100% of the students that attended reported increased knowledge of how cross-contamination of food occurs and how to reduce or prevent food borne illness
