Major Program: Beef

Plan of Work: Improving Agricultural Income

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The beef cattle market prices have been fluctuating and declining during the Covid19 crisis making profits hard to come by.  Garrard County beef producers have been using value added sales such as CPH-45 to increase their profits over just taking the cattle to traditional markets.  The 6 producers that marketed through the CPH-45 sales in Richmond and Lexington Kentucky have reported an increase in prices of 10 to 20 cents per pound due to following the value added protocols used in the CPH-45 program. The program calls for the farmer to follow vaccination, mineral and de-worming protocols that reduces sickness and mortality when the cattle reach the feedlot.  Buyers report a much lower mortality rate in cattle coming out of the CPH-45 program. This increases their profits and they in-turn reward the farmer by purchasing the cattle at a higher price. The 6 participants have reported they intend on continuing to market their calves through the CPH-45 program
