Jefferson County residents have a desire to be life-long learners and play an active role in protecting and improving the environment.

The Jefferson County Extension Service applied to be one of the first hosts for the Kentucky Master Naturalist Program(KMNP).

The KMNP was a joint program with the University of KY, KY Geology Society, UK Forestry Dept, KY Archeology Society, KY Nature Preserves Commission, and UK College of Agriculture, Food and the Environment.

The 22 participants range in age from 18 to 63.  They included park staff, an attorney, substance abuse staff, teachers, high school and college students and nature preserves staff.

The participants attended weekly programs where they increased their knowledge of geology, invasive plants, hydrology, and aquatic insects.  Discussions included: urban soil contamination, urban streams, urban wildlife, invasive species, and urban forest.  They observed how to take soil and water samples.

Those completing KMNP are prepared to serve as citizen scientists.  They volunteered to assist in group naturalist projects, lead field trips, and conduct workshops for youth and adult groups.

Due to the positive response from participants, the plan is to enlist a new group of KMNP members in the fall.
