Beekeepers' Association Field Day

Author: Lawrence Caudle

Planning Unit: KSU Administration

Major Program: Bees/Beekeeping

Plan of Work: Improving Leadership Skills

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Powell County Beekeepers' Association is a group of beekeepers whose members skills vary greatly. Beekeeping itself is a very diversified industry, with no two producers doing the same thing alike. With multiple ways of reaching the same goal, the Powell County Beekeepers' Association wanted to learn more of each other's operations to learn different techniques to take bake to their operation. The Swangos of the Powell County Beekeepers' Association decided to host a field day and open it up the public and neighboring counties. The Swangos led the class which was based on preparing your bees for the winter or winterizing your bees. They taught the class how they checked and treated for varrora mites, how they ventilated the hives to keep the hive dry in the wet winter time, and how they protected the hives' entrances from mice and other predators. There were 15 Beekeepers in attendance of the field day, two of which were from Estill County. Three of the Beekeepers have decided to adopt the practices learned from the Swangos and use the winterizing techniques on their bees so that their bees will survive the winter.
