Cooking with Disabled Adults

Author: Glenna Wooten

Planning Unit: Perry County CES

Major Program: Food Preparation

Plan of Work: Home Gardening, Food Preservation, and Food Preparation

Outcome: Initial Outcome

An agency for disabled adults reached out to Extension for help with teaching their clientele basic cooking skills.  The agency transports the most highly-functioning adults to the Extension office to attend hand-on cooking classes.  Clientele first learn about hygiene and the importance of proper hand washing and hair restraint. Then they were divided into small groups to work on skills such as reading a recipe, learning to use kitchen utensils, and demonstrating their use through preparing a recipe.  Easy recipes with fewer ingredients were chosen. Some of those recipes were from the nutrition calendars and others were 4-H recipes (such as Brownies) that appealed to them.  Most had never had the opportunity to prepare a recipe and use the oven, electric skillet, or cook top.  Even though they will never be able to live by themselves and cook their own meals, they have learned skills that will remain with them throughout their lives. The biggest reward is seeing the joy on their faces when they see their finished recipe and are amazed that they actually prepared the recipe (with assistance from Extension staff and agency staff).
