5K Empowering Youth Leaders

Plan of Work: Empowering Community Leaders

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

McLean County Public Park is a concern for many community members in McLean County. The public restrooms have not been winterized and there is no access to indoor plumbing. McLean County 4-H Volunteers and Members spend a lot of time at the park and received a grant in 2019 to make several improvements to the 4-H Activities Building and Pavilion, but indoor plumbing is something the facility is still lacking.

At the beginning of 2020, I was approached by Ms. Crabtree, McLean County Middle School teacher and Young Leaders in Action sponsor, to collaborate as a community partner with YLA to plan a 5k to raise money for plumbing issues at the park. McLean County 4-Hers and YLA worked together to promote, advertise, plan, manage and organize a successful 5k at Myer Creek Park.4-H volunteers helped set up, time, and cook to make the event possible.

There were 31 runners at the 5k and 4-H and YLA were able to raise $655 through donations and $102 for concessions, that was donated to McLean County Park Board for improvements.
