4-H Livestock Program

Author: Kimberly Lane

Planning Unit: Morgan County CES

Major Program: 4-H Agriculture Core Curriculum AND Natural Resources

Plan of Work: Unrelated to a specified County Plan of Work

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The Morgan County 4-H Livestock club has went through several changes in the past 10 years with a high turnover rate in certified livestock leaders.  However, in the past three years there has been consistency within the club and the leader.  the Livestock leader grew up in the livestock program so she is very passionate and determined to "Make the Best Better."    The group that joined four years ago to develop a foundation for our youth has stuck together and have assisted in recruiting six new members to participate. This group has aspirations to present their accomplishments to the Morgan County Farm Bureau to assist in funding future events.
The club has maintained an active schedule from attending livestock clinics, farm demonstrations, and several hands-on learning sessions. But the club/program has truly strengthened over the past few years and are planning for the future of the club by wanting to broaden out to meet more needs of the Morgan County youth.
During this time the club has attended numerous showmanship classes, participated in the State Skill-a-thon, and several farm on-site visits.
The livestock show was hosted in July by the livestock club in partnership with the Morgan County Fair Board. Members were able to secure $3300 in premium money for all participants. Morgan county youth participated in poultry show, rabbit, goat, sheep and beef show.
