Major Program: 4-H Agriculture Core Curriculum AND Natural Resources

Plan of Work: Developing Leadership and Volunteerism

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

In an effort to promote agriculture and an opportunity for youth to learn more about the livestock industry, volunteers and club leaders work hard year round to provide a 4-H Market Premium Show in Hart County. Twenty-two students tagged market animals this past year.

Four 4-H Livestock Certified Volunteers in Hart County offered trainings for students to receive their six hours of education. Volunteers taught lessons on nutrition, breeds, cuts of meat, livestock selection, and showmanship.

The 4-H Market Premium Show committee made up of community leaders and 4-H volunteers secured donations and organized the show. Over $4000 was donated by local businesses and individuals in the community. The average pay out to each student was over $300.

In order for a student to receive their premiums each 4-H member had to complete a 4-H livestock record book. Students stated in their record books that from their projects they had learned how to read a feed label, identify cuts of meat, show a goat, identify breeds of cattle, and groom a steer. One student stated in her project book, "My livestock projects have taught me so much.  They have taught me to be more responsible, realize that nothing can be accomplished without hard work and taught me to be humble and grateful when winning and losing”.

Not only has the 4-H Market Premium Show benefited the youth but it has also empowered the adult volunteers.  This program gave volunteers the confidence to continue their work with youth and broaden their public speaking ability.
