Major Program: Bees/Beekeeping

Plan of Work: Home & Consumer Horticulture

Outcome: Initial Outcome

In fall of 2018 Extension was approached by a handful of local beekeepers, interested in the possibility of starting a local association. With the continuing decline of large farming operations in Bullitt County, local farmers are looking to diversify. Because beekeeping is a very profitable, small business beekeeping appeared to be a viable solution. With considerable effort as well as the help and dedication of local beekeepers, by January of 2019, the Bullitt County Horticulture Program formed the Bullitt County Extension Beekeepers Association.

Beekeeping is an ever increasing curiosity for homeowners. There had been many inquiries and requests for beekeeping programs. Over the last ten years, many clients have requested beekeeping resources, such as: assistance with a rogue swarm, advice on hive-pest management, revitalizing a hive that has failed to thrive, and many others. Without substantial experience with beekeeping the Horticulture program was limited. Relevant publications and consulting with state level specialists pales in comparison to having a local expert readily available. This need was the driving force behind the formation of the first Beekeeping Association in Bullitt County.

Throughout their first year, the Beekeeping Association offered 13 educational classes; offering information and assistance ranging from how to become a beekeeper, to hive division for growing your product and profitability. This first year was a huge success, with a total of 343 people in attendance. Expectations are that the momentum gained in 2019 will be sustained throughout 2020 and we will continue to evaluate the impact this group is having on the community.
