Planning Unit: Bullitt County CES

Major Program: Community Gardens and Horticulture Therapy

Plan of Work: Natural Resources and the Environment

Outcome: Initial Outcome

This year the Bullitt County Horticulture Program was gifted an expansive seed donation.  It was such a large donation that we struggled with how to sort it, store and how it could best serve our community.  Many of the seeds were distributed in the last couple of classes in the Vegetable Gardening Series.

Then we decided that if any school in Bullitt County should want to start a school garden, that we would provide them the seeds for one.  We made one box for each school that contained 82 packets of vegetable, herb and flower seeds.  Every school with a kindergarten or preschool program received an additional box containing 76 packets of "Sow Easy" seeds that are easier for little hands to grasp.  13 schools chose to participated in the program.

With the remainder of the seed donation we hosted a Seed Exchange for the community.  Participants brought in their locally collected or purchased seeds and took home whatever selection they chose from our donations.  We also featured locally collected native plant seed that we gathered and packaged.  Participants learned about how to collect, store and stratify seeds and got to network with other local gardeners and expand their garden/seed collections.

From the remainder of the donation, we selected some to save for upcoming programs on Winter Sowing, Growing Peppers, Seed Starting and Growing Microgreens. The vast majority of what was left was donated to the Louisville Seed Library for further distribution to the community at large.
