Skill and leadership development in our young people is the foundation of the 4-H program. The Oldham County 4-H Council established 4-H Project Nights, the events were established as a community outreach, club networking and an opportunity for current 4-H members to develop leadership and teaching skills. The leadership and teaching experiences in addition to the citizenship sessions were a welcomed addition to the members 4-H Achievement Applications.
The 4-H Council planned two 4-H Project Nights this program year which involved 98 4-H members exposing each of them to a new project areas. Each Project Night event was composed of two project classes, a Cloverbud project and a citizenship session which all youth participated. Each educational session was taught by a 4-H member focused in the core content areas of Food and Nutrition, Fine Arts, Photography and Citizenship. The citizenship lesson focused on the American Flag (the respect, care and retirement) and the factual information contained in the Naturalization exam. Surprisingly a new experience for many.
“I am amazed at the development of teaching skills of our 4-H members”, stated a parent whose child participated. 4-H members who taught shared, “4-H has taught me to try something new and take risks. My communication skills have improved dramatically through giving speeches and talking in front of my clubs” “It helps me stay focused and on task to complete my projects. I hope 4-H will continue to help and guide me in my future.”
4-H Project Nights were a collaborative effort of the Oldham County 4-H Council and the Oldham County Extension staff.
