Planning Unit: Scott County CES

Major Program: 4-H Family and Consumer Science Core Curriculum

Plan of Work: Basic Life Skills for Youth and Adults in Scott County

Outcome: Initial Outcome

Teaching life skills to youth is a valuable lesson they will use the rest of their life. Scott County 4-H saw the need to teach youth how to cook and prepare food. This will allow youth to not depend on fast food or ready-made meals that many rely on in this day and time. Scott County 4-H saw the importance of eating together while talking about their day and trying new foods. The Scott County 4-H Agent marketed for volunteers. Once volunteers were in place, each gave input on how this club would work, how many could attend, and decided “4-H Cooking 101” curriculum would be implemented. Informational meeting took place where 71 people were in attendance. After the informational meeting, evaluations were collected and Scott County 4-H saw a great need to have a Jr. and Sr. Cooking program. The 4-H Agent again started marketing for another volunteer for the Sr. Cooking program. A third volunteer was found and the planning and implementing of the Jr. and Sr. Cooking program was formed. Each program agreed that they would meet once a month for two hours and would allow 15 youth to be able to participate each month. The Jr. Cooking program is open to 9-11 year olds and the Sr. Cooking program is open for 12- 18 year olds. Every month they have to sign up on a first come, first serve basis. The 4-H Agent and volunteers discussed a list potential recipes and have implemented chili, pizza, and spaghetti. Each program discussed the following topics: kitchen safety, knife safety, appliance safety, MyPlate, working with yeast, and meat safety. Each participant receives a packet of the recipes. The Jr. and Sr. Cooking program has been able to reach 36 youth in Scott County and open new doors for the future of Scott County 4-H.
