Farmers Market Sales Increase with Kentucky Double Dollars Program

Author: Lori Bowling

Planning Unit: Boyd County CES

Major Program: Farmer's Markets

Plan of Work: Small Lot Farming/Food Production

Outcome: Intermediate Outcome

The farmers market in Boyd County has existed for 40 years offering fresh locally grown produce to the residents of Boyd County and surrounding counties.  In 2017 the market total sales $106,159, for cash and senior and wic farmers market nutrition program vouchers.  In 2018 there were 5 new farmers to join the market offering even more of a variety of products for consumers including locally raised beef, chicken, eggs, flowers and value added items such as jams, jellies, syrup and more.  The 2018 year ended with a total market sales up a little over $12,000 more from 2017 total market sales, again this included all cash, senior and wic farmers market nutrition program vouchers as well as some business supported gift certificates.  The 2019 farmers market season was the most successful selling season in the past 20 years with a total market sales at $152,732.  This total not only included the regular cash sales, local business supported gift certificates and the Senior and WIC voucher programs but this year the market added the Kentucky Double Dollar Coupons for Seniors and WIC voucher recipients.  The Senior Double Dollar Coupons were the most successful of the two program with 100% redemption.  The participants of this program were able to buy twice as much locally raised produce with their vouchers and many commented that they were going to be able to preserve the products they purchased for use through the winter to help offset their monthly food costs.  The local farmers were very pleased with the increase in sales and the market has had interested farmers looking to join our market for the 2020 season.
